In Xandara tal-Kelma: Id-Dumnikani tal-Provinċja San Piju V li mietu bejn 1838 u 2024, the author, Fr. Pawl Gatt OP, offers a work that goes beyond a mere historical record. The book, whose title translates to "Herald of the Word," is a biographical tribute to the Dominican friars of the Maltese Province who have passed away since its establishment in 1838. What makes this book particularly compelling is its commitment to honouring not only the 'known' or 'famous' friars but also those who, in their quiet humility, formed the backbone of many Dominican communities.

Fr. Gatt’s introduction, a heartfelt "Kelmtejn Qabel" (the Prologue), sets the tone for the entire volume. He reflects on his time as Provincial and the experience of celebrating prominent figures like P. Anġlu Pirotta and Bishop Anġlu Portelli. Yet, he poignantly notes that the Province was never made up of these celebrated individuals alone. Many friars, both priests and cooperator brothers, contributed immensely without ever receiving public accolades or having streets named after them. It is this core idea, of giving voice to the forgotten and highlighting the dignity of uncelebrated service, that elevates the book from a simple list of names to a deeply spiritual and humanistic document.

The book is structured as a collection of short biographies, meticulously compiled from various sources, including the convent’s Giuliana (historical chronicles) and the writings of other friars like Fr. Mikiel Fsadni OP.

The vignettes themselves are fascinating, painting a rich picture of life within the Province. We meet Fr Antonin Abela, a zealous priest who served as a vice-parish priest and spent many hours in the confessional, ministering to the sick and dying. The review of Fr Klement Abela's life highlights his work as a catechist and his efforts to promote devotion to St. Martin De Porres. We also learn about the bravery of friars during World War II, such as P. Innoċenz Barbara, who unflinchingly continued to celebrate Mass at the St. Elmo fortress during air raids. These stories are a testament to faith, resilience, and dedicated service.

A significant strength of the book is its ability to showcase the diverse ministries undertaken by the friars. From missionaries like P. Anġlu Mamo and P. Kostantin Fsadni who served in Brazil, to educators like P. Ġwann Vinċenz Camilleri who taught future priests and lawyers, the biographies reveal the breadth of the Dominican charism. The book also gives a glimpse into the internal workings of the Order, from the simple, unrecorded service of a cooperator brother to the administrative roles of a prior or provincial.

Xandara tal-Kelma is more than a historical reference; it is a source of spiritual inspiration. Fr. Gatt hopes that the book will inspire both religious and lay readers, just as the lives of these friars have inspired him. By bringing these figures 'back into the light,' he invites readers to reflect on the meaning of a life dedicated to service, whether in the public eye or in the quiet confines of a convent. It is a work that reminds us that true greatness is often found not in grand accomplishments, but in the faithful and humble completion of daily duties.
